Nursing Burnout

Feeling tired anyone?

Burnout can affect anyone in the nursing profession. As a nurse, you have many tasks to perform in a limited amount of time. Having to do to many things at once can make you feel overwhelmed, or anxious. It is important to recognize the symptoms of burnout and get help from friends, family, or co-workers if needed.
Here are some tips to help prevent burnout from www.coping.org
Build a support system for yourself of friends, or family
Participate in activity outside of work
Identify goals
Eat healthy
Practice good communication in the workplace
Say "no" when necessary
There are too many nurses who have stopped working because of burnout. Don’t let yourself become one of them.

Take care of yourself, and you will be able to take care of others!

Neglect of Oral Care

How would you like to have this in your mouth?

The video I have posted is of a pair of dentures that have probably not been cleaned in quite some time. The person who is cleaning them is gagging because the smell of the dentures is so overpowering. In our Nursing Practicum class we had a dentist whom came to speak to us about the importance of oral care for our patients. A nurse should never forget to do oral care, as it is very important to the overall health of the patient. The mouth should also be checked for ulcers, which can be cause by improper fitting dentures.
Next time you perform your hygiene routine for someone, remember this video!

Don’t forget the mouth!

Nursing Shortage is Scary

Scary News...

The number of working nurses is decreasing due to burnout. The nurses that are currently practicing are aging and will eventually retire. This means that there will not be enough nurses to care for the increase in patients, especially, the baby boomers. Also, nurses will have less and less time to spend at the bedside with his/her patient's, which will decrease the quality of patient care given. And the scariest thing is that the nursing shortage will lead to an increase in patient mortality rates. I'm glad I'm in nursing to help out. The more nurses the better!

Technology Aids in Provision of Health Care

Hi Everyone!

I personally believe that technology is helping when it comes to overcoming communication barriers in health care. There are many tools that have been developed through the use of technology that aid the nurse in providing the best care possible for his/her patients. Some of these developments include the Electronic Health Record (EHR), barcode technology for pharmaceuticals/medications, telehealth nursing and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) usage. Everyone who has access to a computer can access the patient’s files, which decreases communication barriers between health care providers. The use of these tools saves the amount of time it takes to review patient’s files and medications, which leads to better and more time efficient patient care.

An example of an EHR is shown in the picture above.

My Introduction : )

Hi Bloggers!

How’s everyone doing? I am a first year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at UOIT. This is my first blog that I have created in my Info and Communication in Health Care class. I have already been to school for four years. I went to Centennial College for a three year Massage Therapy Advanced Diploma program and then I did a one year certificate program at Fleming College in Preparatory Health Science. I have been a Registered Massage Therapist for just over a year now, and I am going back to school for Nursing to broaden my knowledge. I enjoy working with and caring for people and hope to apply the skills I have learned in Massage Therapy to Nursing.
